Living in Leitrim we are spoiled for choice with all the wonderful hills and lakes surrounding us. The seven glens of north Leitrim offer walkers stunning views whether looking up at or down from the hills. Weather permitting, a dip in a mountain lake is always refreshing on a long hike! This is the perfect place for locals and visitors to experience what’s great about Leitrim. Nuala from Tawnylust Lodge would like to share her favourite places to walk in Leitrim with you. What to see;

Whether you opt for the 8km trail head walk or the longer Arroo mountain walk, you are in for an absolute treat. The views out to Classie Bawn Castle at Mullaghmore, Sligo and the Donegal mountains on the Wild Atlantic Way, as well as a birds eye view over Glenade valley are stunning, either way you’ll have made the right choice. Where is it?

Even the drive to the starting point of the walk is stunning such as travelling from Manorhamilton on the R280, you will be in one of the most iconic U shaped glacial valleys in Europe, with views of mountains either side and Glenade lake, a true feast for the eyes.  For instance, Truskmore, Leitrim’s highest mountain, the iconic Eagle’s Rock and Peek a Dha to the left and the majestic Dartry mountains to the right. How long is it?

The Arroo Trail Head path is path is easy underfoot and the ascent is just 300m so not too difficult to complete and the views are well worth it. It is a linear walk on private road and bog track. The walk is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty and fauna to be seen there include; common lizard, butterflies, hen harrier, red grouse, buzzard and chough.
